Description Statement:
The Ethnographic Report and Reflection Report were created for TESL 530 Intercultural Communication and Language Teaching taught by Dr. Jerry Ruth Fall 2, 2016 and exposes the collectivist Chinese culture and individualist American culture, haptic and proxemic norms of China and the United States and dining social norms. The Ethnographic Report is a Tale of two Cultures each has values to be learned from. The Ethnographic Report exposes the differences China and North America have yet they each bring something to us to be learned from. In the Reflection Report are my thoughts on China’s Culture and the Culture in North America and how I have learned to enjoy both in teaching and for personal living.
Reflection Statement:
The observations from and the reflection report server to remind me as I teach and interact with my students that I should be very careful how I look at other cultures, people, and what they do, and sharing the differences of other cultures as a valued part of who each of us are, instilling this into my students. Furthermore, I reflect on how the differences between collectivist societies like China and the individualistic societies like the United States have their desirable qualities and be confident that these differences are neutral. The Chinese build relationships and an example of this is how they come together in their communities and families making sure the elderly are honored and taken care of with respect. The United States individualistic allows for freedom of expression, acting upon what the individual wants or thinks is correct rather than what the group thinks is right or correct. We should not engage them with fear, powerlessness, partial knowledge, and limited spiritual horizons, however we should engage others from different cultures with curiosity to learn more about their culture so we will be more informed and educated about them and their culture (Smith,2009).
Application Statement:
As I have traversed this course I have learned that I need to stay current with my students’ cultural needs as it applies to haptics, chronemics, proxemics of their differing cultures. Secondly, I need to make my students aware of the cultural dynamics of the cultures represented in the classroom so we can engage others from different cultures with curiosity to learn more about their culture so we will be more informed and educated about them and their culture (Smith,2009). Our own cultural idioms scare some people not in the way of being frightened but apprehension of learning for we speak frequently in idioms and do not realize it. I need to give students a safe environment in the classroom to allow them to practice and share their willingness to learn English.
